When the hot weather days of spring and summer start to roll in, you might feel initially jovial about it. The season equates to vacation, road trips, and other fun things to do outside. However, it is only a matter of time until the incessant heat of wave hits you – humidity leads to unmanageable hair that is out of control. So, what do you do?
Before you crawl back into your little nook, it is time to brave humidity and stop fussing about your hair. We have put together a list of tips to keep your mane in check even when the humid weather is beating on you.
Moisture
is Key!
You might think
it is counterintuitive but keeping your locks moisturised is a great technique
to reduce the effects of humidity on your hair. If you are worried that some
moisturizing formulas can weigh your hair down, you’ll find a few good products
that won’t. Use a deep conditioner at least two times a week during spring or
summer (focusing on the halfway point to the ends). Dry your hair with a towel.
Finish it off with products designed to give shine to hair and fight frizz.
No
Heat Styling
If you cannot
live without the use of blow dryers and other heat styling tools, you might
want to re-think that when dealing with high humidity weather. The stickiness
of the atmosphere won’t produce good results on hair even when styled with heat.
In fact, it can make your hair more prone to developing frizz when exposed to
humidity. Skip the hot tools and air dry instead.
Treat
Your Hair
A good anti-humidity
hair care routine always starts in the shower – with the use of right shampoo
and conditioner. However, it does not end there. Make sure you use a
lightweight serum or treatment oil on hair post-shower or when you step out of
the house. These products are designed to control the appearance of
flyaways as they contain an ingredient called dimethicone. This
ingredient serves as a barrier for your hair to prevent humid air from being
absorbed by your strands.
Seal
the Deal
Using products
designed to introduce moisture to the hair and fight flyaway or frizz formation
is not enough. Humidity can be a tough opponent for your hair. Hence, you need
to seal your hair cuticle as part of your humidity-busting styling measure. By
sealing in the hair cuticle, you will prevent moisture from leaving your hair (and
less likely to absorb humidity).
Your brushing
technique as you blow dry hair is one example of sealing in hair cuticle. With
your boar bristle brush, direct heat coming from the blow dryer in a downward
manner until you get to the ends. This process causes your hair cuticle to lay
flat and therefore less likely to open up when exposed to humid air. You can
then finish it off with a blast of cold air from your blow dryer as a final
sealing procedure.
Don’t
Fight It
When it comes to
hair and styling, this is one of the most important rules you will learn: follow
(not fight) your hair’s natural texture. Make your life easy. Stop trying to relax
and straighten your curls. Do a research on which products work best for
styling your hair type or texture and make it humidity-proof.
Protect!
Protection is
still better than any measure to bust humidity. Accessories such as scarves or
sun hats protect your hair from the harsh effects of the sun, as well as humid
air from penetrating into the hair strands. As a bonus, they can make for a
stylish look, too!
What is your
secret to fighting the effects of humidity on your hair?
